Summer is here. I am pretty sure that all of us have a variety of activities to do and enjoy for the rest of the season. For those who have the green thumb and love gardening, why not make your summer filled with beautiful flower blooms by joining the Winnipeg Bloom Contest? With the permission of Take Pride Winnipeg, a private, non-profit organization committed to inspiring civic pride, raising public awareness and promoting citizen responsibility in making the city of Winnipeg clean and beautiful, I am pleased to provide you with the details of the contest.
As a City Councillor, I was given the chance to enter 20 nominees for this contest. Hence, please read the mechanics carefully and call our office at 986-8402 should you wish to participate in this contest.
- Plant some pride and beautify your community. Make your property the most beautiful in the city.
- 2009 marks the 12th year of the Winnipeg in Bloom Contest (aka Flower Power). The Home Depot is Title Sponsor, with Barkman Concrete, Canada Post, City Press Ltd, Rainbow Stage, Starbucks Coffee, Winnipeg Free Press, Winnipeg REALTORS® and City of Winnipeg as Gold Sponsors in 2009.
- There are six categories: residential property, business, apartment blocks and condominiums, community effort, business improvement zone, and previous winner residential (first place winners in each area for 2007 & 2008 are placed in this category). The contest is open to front yard properties only within City of Winnipeg municipal boundaries (this means St. Norbert properties may enter, but East St. Paul and West St. Paul cannot, and back yards are excluded).
How to enter:
Enter at all Winnipeg Home Depot locations OR fill out the online registration form OR by phone at 956-7590. Contest closes July 13, 2009.
The City of Winnipeg is divided into a number of judging areas, and each area will have a winner, with residential areas having 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. Once a property has been judged, invitations to the awards ceremony at Rainbow Stage will be dropped off for the property owner. Please note that any entered properties without a front yard garden will not receive an invitation. Judges will base their decision on overall curb appeal, innovative features and property cleanliness.
At the awards ceremony, contestants will be able to view a visual presentation of all entries, discover the winning properties (kept secret until the awards ceremony) and be eligible for door prizes as well. Following the presentation of awards and door prizes, coffee and dessert will be provided by Starbucks Coffee.
For those interested in touring the properties entered, a list of entries (addresses only, not names) will be available on this page by July 19, 2009. A list of the winning properties will be available on this page on August 18, 2009.
In addition to local accolades, the city of Winnipeg has received national recognition in the national Communities in Bloom Contest, winning in 1995, 2001 and 2005. Since 2005, Winnipeg has been part of the non-competitive Friends category.
Based on entries received, the Winnipeg in Bloom committee will choose one residential property to be entered from Winnipeg into this national contest, which is being held again this year. Each Winner of the national contest will receive a Miracle-Gro Gardening Gift Basket (valued at $100) and will be featured in Communities in Bloom and/or Scotts communications. For more on this contest and last year's winners, please visit http://www.communitiesinbloom.ca/Articles/?id=3&aid=255 .
Remember, in order to be considered for the national contest, you must be entered in our local contest!
Are you in another municipality and want some tips on how to start your own contest? Do you have questions about this contest? Questions regarding the contest may be directed to Colleen Kurlowich, Manager of Programs & Operations for Take Pride Winnipeg! and chair of the Winnipeg in Bloom committee, colleen@takepride.mb.ca .
Frequently Asked Questions:
What does it cost to enter?
NOTHING! It is fun and free! If you garden, you already spend some money on plantings, so there is no additional cost to you. Entry cards are available at The Home Depot, with an entry box on site, or you may also enter online, so there aren't even postage fees!
Why should I enter?
Take Pride Winnipeg! wants all Winnipeggers to Clean Up and Green Up! Show your pride in your skills and your love of gardening. It is fun to encourage a friendly competition enter your own property, and challenge your neighbours to get involved! Get active with your family and make it part of a way to share your passion with your children and grandchildren. In addition to the prizes for winning properties, you may also be eligible for door prizes. Viewing other properties may also inspire new ideas for your own property!
Why are backyards excluded from the contest?
Take Pride Winnipeg! is interested in increasing the curb appeal of the entire city of Winnipeg. There may be a number of fabulous back yards in the city, but often they are hidden by fences and other obstructions. We want to encourage Winnipeggers to show off their skills in their front yards, where they can be appreciated by all.
Why are East St. Paul/West St. Paul properties excluded from the contest?
As we receive funding from the City of Winnipeg, and not from other municipalities, at this time, the budget does not allow for extension of this contest outside City limits. In future years, if there is interest and funding from neighbouring municipalities, we may consider the expansion.
I am a business with limited frontage. How can I get involved?
Businesses often face challenges with frontage and lack of space to garden. Get creative! Create a mini-garden with hanging baskets or window boxes. Create a mobile planter by planting flowers in the basket of a child's bicycle or in a wheelbarrow, which can be taken indoors after business hours. Think of a planting theme which will suit the nature of your business (such as your logo).
What is a "community effort"?
The community effort category includes parks, community centres, churches, as well as a community effort within a residential street if 4 or more houses in a row on a street collaborate together on a gardening project, they can enter their group as a community effort, as well as enter each house individually in the residential property category.
What is previous winner residential?
Any residential property that won first place in their area (residential category is divided into 14 areas) in the past two years will be placed into the previous winner category if they choose to enter this year. We do this out of fairness to the other properties in their areas, to be able to allow for more winners in each area, and give them a chance to shine. These previous winners across the entire will compete against each other for a special prize.
If I have a garden on my balcony of my apartment, can I enter as a residential property?
Our apologies, but no, you cannot. If you are a balcony gardener, encourage others in your apartment block to participate, and enter your block in the apartment block/condominium category.
Can I plant on my boulevard?
Yes! The boulevard by-law is now in effect! Please check the City of Winnipeg for details on the by-law: http://winnipeg.ca/publicworks/Parks/boulevard.asp . Be sure to check with officials before planting, so you are aware if any construction work is planned on your boulevard this year.
Who are my judges?
The names of the judges for your area are not revealed to you, but all judges are recognized at the awards ceremony. The judging teams (groups of two) are all volunteers, and may include local horticulturalists and designers, REALTORS®, sponsors, committee members and past participants. We thank them all for volunteering their valuable time and skills in judging.
